#MMK || 3 towns vying for Regional MMK awards, get evaluated
The municipalities of Anda and Bani in Pangasinan, and Sinait in Ilocos Sur are the three towns contending for this year’s Regional Search for the Most Outstanding Coastal Community – Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan (MMK) by the Department of Agriculture (DA) – Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).
The MMK is a flagship program of the Bureau that aims to promote fisheries protection and conservation, focuses on the significance of sustainably managing the fisheries and aquatic resources, and promotes stakeholder’s engagement in resource protection and conservation.
The BFAR Region 1 MMK Secretariat and concerned Provincial Fishery Offices, along with the representatives from the Department of Agriculture, Department of Interior and Local Government, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and Philippine Coast Guard, conducted the site evaluation and validation on November 10-12, 2021 in the said participating municipalities.
The team also reviewed the documents submitted, in accordance to the five criteria of the program: (1) no illegal fishing; (2) observance of closed fishing season; (3) establishment of marine protected areas; (4) clean coastal waters without domestic and industrial wastes; and (5) effective mangrove protection and rehabilitation program.
The queries and concerns include monitoring of increase in annual fish catch; solid waste management; implementation of off-fishing season; and coastal sanitation.
Hon. Mayor Joganie Rarang of Anda, Hon. Mayor Shee-an C. Guzman of Sinait, Bani Mayor Gwen Palafox-Yamamoto, represented by SB Member Ronel Catabay, and the municipal agriculturists with the fishery technicians exerted their full effort and support to the program. They expressed their high hopes in bringing home the prestigious MMK awards.
The Top 3 Regional winners will receive Php 2 million, Php 1 million, and Php 500,000 worth of fisheries livelihood projects, respectively.
The Champion of the Regional MMK program will be endorsed to the BFAR-Central Office for the National Evaluation for the chance to compete in the national search. (RFTFCD-Info)
